Places & Spaces is now closed to applications

Places & Spaces has invested more than £2 million into projects that improve community facilities, creating a real legacy for Birmingham 2022. There is still up to £10,000 available for new projects that create, enhance and redevelop places and spaces but applications for extra funding are now closed. However the Active Together will remain open, helping sports clubs and organisations with projects.

Get up to £10,000 to improve your Place or Space and keep your community physically active

Crowdfunder and Sport England have teamed up to make an initial £7 million of match funding available to help community sport and physical activity groups improve their facilities and unite communities as part of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

If you are a community sport and physical activity group and are looking to create, enhance or redevelop your sports facility for the benefit of the community as part of the Birmingham 2022 legacy, then you could be eligible to receive up to £10,000 in match funding!

If you have already started a crowdfunding campaign you can apply for the match funding via your Crowdfunder dashboard.

They raised £21,359, including a £9,000 pledge from Sport England to make it a reality.

Get up to £10,000

Community sport and physical activity groups looking to create, enhance or redevelop sports facilities for the benefit of their community as part of Birmingham 2022.

You need a crowdfunding project to apply for funding. Start or continue adding your project and, if eligible, you'll be prompted to apply.

Criteria
Places and Spaces – Sport England’s Extra Funding Scheme to unite communities as part of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

This investment aims to help community sport and physical activity groups crowdfunding for capital (building or refurbishment) works that will enhance places and spaces within their local area, to unite communities as part of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Our match investment, of up to £10,000 is to help create or improve community sport facilities that will help to bring communities together and celebrate the Commonwealth Games. Projects should be driven by the community, for the community, to improve what is available and enable more people to be physically active.

To be eligible to apply, organisations must be:

  • Local sports clubs,
  • Charities, community, voluntary and social enterprise sector organisations that deliver sport and/or physical activity in their community, including organisations that are not solely or primarily sports organisations,
  • Town or parish councils delivering activity within their community,
  • Education establishments that provide access for their whole community,
  • Able to complete their project by 31st December 2023

The following are not eligible for funding:

  • Individuals or sole traders,
  • For profit businesses or partnerships,
  • Local authorities, excluding town and parish councils,
  • Commercial sport and physical activity providers, e.g. private gyms,
  • Leisure operators operating more than one site.

Pledge Criteria

If your application is approved, you’ll get a match funding offer of up to 50% towards your initial crowdfunding target, up to a maximum of £10,000.

To receive a pledge, you will need to do two things (the ‘pledge conditions’):

1) raise at least 25% of your initial target,

2) raise this from a minimum number of supporters.

Following receipt of a pledge you will also need to reach 100% of your initial funding target to receive the funds from Sport England.

Note – Sport England reserve the right to vary these pledge criteria; projects will be notified if their pledge criteria will vary from the stated terms above.

Funded projects will be required to agree to the Places and Spaces Grant Conditions.

Success story

A new community gym in Eastbourne

The community in Eastbourne came together to raise the funds and start work on a new boxing and fitness gym, located at the football club. It unlocked +Extra funding from both Sport England and the East Sussex Community Wellbeing Fund, helping them to raise more than £16,000 to get started.
